Whiskey Sour

Whiskey Sour

The Whiskey Sour is a classic cocktail blending the bright citrus punch of fresh lemon juice, the smooth warmth of bourbon whiskey, and subtle sweetness from simple syrup. Perfectly balanced and refreshingly crisp, this cocktail is easy to make and ideal for any occasion, whether casual or sophisticated.

Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 2 ounces Bourbon Whiskey (or Rye Whiskey for a spicier profile)
  • 3/4 ounce Fresh Lemon Juice
  • 1/2 ounce Simple Syrup (adjust to taste)
  • Ice Cubes
  • Optional: 1 Egg White (for frothy texture)

Variations & Optional Additions

  • Honey Syrup instead of Simple Syrup for floral sweetness
  • Fresh fruit juice (Blood Orange or Grapefruit) for a seasonal twist
  • Aquafaba as vegan alternative to Egg White
  • Few drops of Angostura Bitters for added complexity

Instructions

  1. Prepare Your Ingredients: Squeeze fresh lemons to measure about 3/4 ounce of juice per drink. Measure 2 ounces of bourbon whiskey, and have 1/2 ounce simple syrup ready (adjust depending on sweetness preference).
  2. Shake It Up: Add bourbon, lemon juice, simple syrup, and egg white if using into a cocktail shaker without ice. Shake vigorously for about 10 seconds to emulsify and create a foamy texture.
  3. Add Ice and Shake Again: Add ice cubes to the shaker and shake again for 15 to 20 seconds to chill and properly dilute the mixture, blending all flavors well.
  4. Strain and Serve: Strain the cocktail into a rocks glass filled with fresh ice for a classic presentation. Alternatively, serve neat in a coupe glass for a cleaner sip.
  5. Garnish and Enjoy: Garnish with a chilled lemon wheel or a maraschino cherry to add color and aroma, completing your Whiskey Sour experience.

Notes

  • Always use freshly squeezed lemon juice for the best brightness and natural flavor.
  • Adjust the amount of simple syrup to balance the cocktail’s sweetness to your preference.
  • Use a quality bourbon or rye whiskey to enhance the complexity and enjoyment of the drink.
  • If adding egg white, perform a dry shake (without ice) first to build a creamy froth.
  • Chill your glassware beforehand to keep the cocktail refreshing longer.
