Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 2.5 to 3 pounds Yukon Gold or Russet potatoes, peeled or unpeeled
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 to 1.5 cups whole milk or half-and-half
  • 1 teaspoon salt, plus more to taste
  • ½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper, plus more to taste

Optional Add-ins

  • 2 to 3 cloves garlic, minced or whole (optional)
  • Chopped fresh chives or parsley for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prep the Potatoes: Peel the potatoes if desired, then cut into uniform 1 to 2-inch chunks for even cooking. Rinse them under cold water to remove excess starch for a creamier texture.
  2. Add Ingredients to Cooker: Place the cut potatoes in the slow cooker. Add butter, salt, pepper, and garlic if using. Pour in enough milk or cream to cover the potatoes halfway to keep them moist during cooking.
  3. Cook Low and Slow: Cover and cook on low heat for 4 to 5 hours, or until the potatoes are fork-tender. Check occasionally and add a splash of milk if the mixture looks dry.
  4. Mash and Mix: Once tender, mash the potatoes directly in the slow cooker with a potato masher or hand mixer to your preferred consistency. Adjust seasoning by adding more salt, pepper, or butter if desired.
  5. Serve Warm: Garnish with chopped fresh herbs or a sprinkle of paprika if you like, then serve the mashed potatoes hot and enjoy.

Notes

  • Choose Yukon Gold potatoes for creaminess or Russets for fluffiness; a mix works well.
  • Cut potatoes into uniform pieces to ensure even cooking.
  • Keep enough milk or cream to prevent drying but avoid watery potatoes.
  • Season in layers by salting early and adjusting at the end for best flavor.
  • Mash gently to avoid gluey texture, just until smooth and fluffy.
