Ingredients

Scale

Dough Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour (or gluten-free flour blend for gluten-free option)
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 cup milk (or plant-based milk for vegan version)
  • 2 large eggs (or flax eggs for vegan version)
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted (or coconut oil for vegan version)

Glaze Ingredients

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 23 tablespoons maple syrup or maple extract
  • 12 tablespoons milk (or plant-based milk)

For Frying

  • Oil for frying (vegetable oil or coconut oil)

Optional Toppings

  • Chopped toasted pecans or walnuts
  • Cinnamon sugar
  • Dark chocolate for drizzling

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Dough: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour and baking powder. In a separate bowl, combine milk, melted butter, eggs, and sugar, mixing well until fully incorporated. Gently fold the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients, mixing just until combined to avoid overworking the dough.
  2. Shape the Donuts: On a floured surface, roll the dough to about 1/2 inch thickness. Use a sharp knife or donut cutter to cut into rectangular bar shapes. Place the cut dough bars on a parchment-lined baking sheet and let them rest for 10 to 15 minutes to develop texture and rise slightly.
  3. Fry to Golden Perfection: Heat oil in a deep fryer or heavy pan to around 350°F (175°C). Fry the dough bars in batches, being careful not to overcrowd the pan. Cook for about 2 minutes on each side until golden brown and crispy. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
  4. Prepare the Maple Glaze: While the donuts cool slightly, whisk together powdered sugar, maple syrup or extract, and milk until smooth with a drizzling consistency.
  5. Glaze the Donuts: Dip the top of each warm donut into the maple glaze. Place on a wire rack to set. For extra gloss and flavor, dip again once the first coat has set.

Notes

  • Maintain oil temperature at approximately 350°F to ensure crispy edges without burning.
  • Mix the dough just until ingredients are combined to avoid tough donuts.
  • Use fresh maple syrup or quality maple extract for the best glaze flavor.
  • Allow donuts to cool slightly before glazing to prevent runny glaze.
  • Rest the shaped dough bars before frying to improve texture and rise.
