Greek Salad

Greek Salad

Greek Salad is a classic Mediterranean dish blending crisp cucumbers, ripe tomatoes, Kalamata olives, tangy feta cheese, and a zesty dressing of olive oil, lemon juice or vinegar, and dried oregano. This refreshing, nutritious salad is quick and easy to prepare, making it a perfect light meal or side dish that delivers a vibrant burst of flavors and textures with every bite.

Ingredients

Scale

Vegetables

  • 2 ripe tomatoes, diced
  • 1 large cucumber, partially peeled and sliced into half-moons or cubes
  • 1/2 medium red onion, thinly sliced into rings

Other Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup Kalamata olives, pitted and halved
  • 100g (about 3.5 oz) feta cheese, crumbled

Dressing

  • 3 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 tbsp fresh lemon juice or red wine vinegar
  • 1/2 tsp dried oregano
  • Sea salt, to taste
  • Freshly ground black pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Vegetables: Wash and dry all vegetables thoroughly. Dice the tomatoes into bite-sized pieces, slice the cucumbers into half-moons or cubes, and cut the red onion into thin rings to ensure balanced bites.
  2. Combine the Ingredients: In a large bowl, gently toss together the diced tomatoes, sliced cucumbers, red onion rings, and Kalamata olives to evenly distribute flavors.
  3. Crumble the Feta: Sprinkle the crumbled feta cheese evenly over the vegetable mixture, adding creaminess and a salty tang that defines the salad.
  4. Dress the Salad: Drizzle extra virgin olive oil and freshly squeezed lemon juice or vinegar over the salad. Season with sea salt, black pepper, and dried oregano. Toss lightly to combine without breaking up the feta too much.
  5. Serve Immediately: Serve the Greek Salad fresh to enjoy its full vibrant flavors and crisp textures. Letting it sit too long can cause the ingredients to lose their crunch.

Notes

  • Choose Fresh Veggies: Use seasonal, ripe vegetables for maximum flavor and crunch.
  • Don’t Overdress: Add just enough dressing to lightly coat ingredients without making the salad soggy.
  • Use Quality Feta: Authentic Greek feta has a crumbly texture and rich tang that elevates the dish.
  • Chill the Salad: Refrigerate for 20 minutes before serving to let the flavors meld while maintaining freshness.
  • Skip Washing Olives: Avoid rinsing Kalamata olives unless they are very salty, to keep their distinctive briny flavor.
