Dough Ingredients
- 2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
- 1 cup warm water (about 110°F / 43°C)
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
Garlic Butter Topping
- ¼ cup unsalted butter, melted
- 3 cloves fresh garlic, minced
- 2 tablespoons fresh parsley or Italian herbs, finely chopped
- Optional: ¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese
- Prepare the Dough: In a large bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and active dry yeast. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until it foams, showing the yeast is activated. Add the flour, salt, and olive oil, mixing until a sticky dough forms.
- Knead the Dough: Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic, developing gluten for that perfect texture.
- Let the Dough Rise: Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a towel or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm spot for 1 to 1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
- Shape the Knots: Punch down the dough, divide into equal pieces. Roll each into a rope and tie into a loose knot. Place knots on a parchment-lined baking sheet with space between each.
- Second Rise: Cover the shaped knots and let rest for 30 minutes for a light, fluffy bake.
- Bake to Perfection: Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C) and bake the knots for 12-15 minutes until golden brown on top.
- Make the Garlic Butter: While baking, melt the butter in a small pan. Add minced garlic and chopped parsley, simmer briefly to infuse flavors.
- Toss and Serve: Brush the hot knots with the garlic butter mixture immediately after baking. Optionally, sprinkle with grated Parmesan cheese for extra savoriness.
Notes
- Use room temperature ingredients to help activate the yeast effectively.
- Knead the dough thoroughly to build structure and achieve softness.
- Allow the dough to rise in a warm, draft-free spot or use your oven’s proof setting.
- Brush the knots with garlic butter while they are hot to fully absorb the flavors.
- Fresh herbs add brightness, but dried herbs can be used if fresh are unavailable.
