Ingredients

Scale

Meatball Mixture

  • 1/2 lb ground beef
  • 1/2 lb ground pork
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs (or gluten-free breadcrumbs for gluten-free option)
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • Salt, to taste
  • Freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • Pinch of nutmeg (optional)

Creamy Sauce

  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1/2 cup onion, finely chopped
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 3/4 cup heavy cream (or coconut/cashew cream for dairy-free)

Buttered Noodles

  • 8 oz egg noodles (or gluten-free pasta or mashed potatoes)
  • 3 tbsp butter
  • Salt, to taste
  • Freshly ground black pepper, to taste

Garnishes (Optional)

  • Fresh chopped parsley or chives

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Meatball Mixture: In a large bowl, gently combine the ground beef and pork with breadcrumbs, egg, finely chopped onion and garlic, salt, pepper, and a pinch of nutmeg if desired. Mix thoroughly but carefully to avoid overworking the meat, ensuring even seasoning and a tender texture.
  2. Shape and Brown the Meatballs: Form the mixture into bite-sized meatballs. Heat butter and a small amount of oil in a skillet over medium heat. Brown the meatballs evenly on all sides until golden and cooked through. Remove meatballs from the skillet and set aside.
  3. Make the Creamy Sauce: In the same skillet, add more butter and sauté the chopped onions until translucent. Stir in the beef broth, Dijon mustard, Worcestershire sauce, and heavy cream. Let the sauce simmer gently, stirring occasionally, until it thickens to a creamy consistency.
  4. Return Meatballs to the Sauce: Carefully add the browned meatballs back into the sauce. Simmer together for a few minutes to allow the flavors to meld perfectly.
  5. Cook the Buttered Noodles: While the meatballs simmer, cook egg noodles according to package instructions. Drain the noodles, then toss them with butter, salt, and pepper until they are rich and comforting, ready to soak up the sauce.

Notes

  • Don’t overmix the meat to keep meatballs tender, not tough.
  • Brown meatballs well to lock in flavor and add appealing texture.
  • Use real heavy cream for the traditional thick, silky sauce texture.
  • Simmer the sauce gently on low heat to prevent the cream from curdling.
  • Butter noodles generously for a comforting finish.
