Ingredients

Scale

Dry Ingredients

  • 2 1/4 cups (280g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Wet Ingredients

  • 1 cup (227g) unsalted butter, softened to room temperature
  • 3/4 cup (150g) granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup (165g) packed brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Add-ins

  • 1 1/2 cups (270g) semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 cup (about 165g) M&Ms candy pieces

Instructions

  1. Prepare the dry ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking soda, and salt to evenly distribute the leavening agents and seasoning throughout the dough.
  2. Cream the butter and sugars: In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar together until light and fluffy, creating a tender cookie crumb.
  3. Add eggs and vanilla: Beat in the eggs one at a time, ensuring each is fully incorporated before adding the next, then stir in the vanilla extract to build warmth and depth of flavor.
  4. Combine wet and dry ingredients: Gradually add the dry flour mixture to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined to avoid overworking the dough, which could make cookies tough.
  5. Fold in chocolate chips and M&Ms: Gently fold the chocolate chips and M&Ms into the dough, spreading them evenly for bursts of chocolate and candy in every bite.
  6. Scoop and bake: Drop rounded tablespoons of dough onto a parchment-lined baking sheet, spacing them adequately to allow spreading. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 10 to 12 minutes, until edges are golden but centers remain soft.
  7. Cool and enjoy: Remove from oven and let cookies cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely for perfect texture.

Notes

  • Use room temperature butter to cream more easily with sugars for a smooth dough texture.
  • Do not overmix; stir until ingredients are just combined to keep cookies soft and tender.
  • Optionally, sprinkle a pinch of sea salt on top right before baking to enhance sweet and salty contrast.
  • Chill dough for at least 30 minutes to prevent excessive spreading and to intensify flavor.
  • Use parchment paper or silicone baking mats to prevent sticking and ensure even baking.
