Ingredients

Scale

Potatoes

  • 3 pounds Yukon Gold or Russet potatoes, peeled and sliced

Cheese Sauce

  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour (or gluten-free flour alternative)
  • 3 cups milk or cream
  • 2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese (freshly shredded for best melting)
  • 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella or gouda cheese (optional for variety)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped onion or 2 cloves garlic, minced (optional)

Topping

  • 1 cup bread crumbs (use gluten-free bread crumbs if needed)
  • 1/2 cup shredded cheese (extra sharp cheddar or preferred cheese)
  • Butter or oil for greasing the baking dish

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Potatoes: Peel and slice the potatoes into uniform pieces to ensure even cooking. Boil them in salted water until they are tender but still hold their shape, then drain and set aside.
  2. Make the Cheese Sauce: In a saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Whisk in the flour gradually to form a smooth roux. Slowly add milk or cream, stirring constantly to prevent lumps, and cook until the sauce thickens. Remove from heat and stir in shredded cheese until melted and smooth. Add salt, pepper, and optionally sautéed onions or garlic for enhanced flavor.
  3. Combine Ingredients: Gently fold the cooked potatoes into the cheese sauce, mixing carefully to coat all pieces evenly. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed.
  4. Bake Until Golden: Butter a baking dish and transfer the cheesy potato mixture into it. Sprinkle bread crumbs and additional shredded cheese evenly on top. Bake in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for 25-30 minutes, or until the topping is golden and crisp. For an extra crunchy crust, broil for 1-2 minutes at the end of baking.

Notes

  • Use freshly shredded cheese for better melting and smoother sauce.
  • Do not overcook potatoes; boil until just tender to prevent them from becoming mushy in the bake.
  • Adding sautéed onions, garlic, or fresh herbs elevates the flavor profile.
  • Adjust milk or cream quantity to achieve your preferred sauce thickness.
  • Broil briefly at the end of baking for a crispier topping.
